Asheville to Nashville

Today, an update from Daisy Jones-Klein:

Hi everybody! Dad's out for a swim, and Mom's checking emails. They asked me to update y'all on things. That's right ... I'm now a dogblogger!

First of all, some of you have commented -- and not all that nicely -- on whether I ride on the roof or not. I want to state that except for the Homecoming Float or Ticker Tape Parades, I most certainly do not! Think about it: who poops, and who picks up the poop? Being treated like a dog is a pretty sweet gig around here; my Peeps may be bipeds but they're still pretty useful.

Today, they chauffeured me from Asheville (pretty mountains, but yucky cats and goats!) to Nashville. 'Twas a very pretty drive, much of it winding through Appalachian Mountain passes. Not too long, either; only about 300 miles on the highway. And for those of you who just can't seem to get enough pictures of power plants, here's one taken as we crossed the Clinch River in Tennessee:

Tonight, we're staying at the Drury Inn & Suites in Nashville. It's pet-friendly and pretty comfy. Here's a picture of me being escorted to our room:

Tomorrow, Memphis! But tonight, Home is where the lap is.

Raleigh to Asheville

Last night was with Robbyne's family in Raleigh, with a couple of good meals and a bit of long-overdue sleep. We said bye-bye to Robbyne's Dad & daughter Lindsay and left Raleigh early in the afternoon.

We pointed the cars west, and nearly 300 miles later found ourselves at the home of our good friends Steve & Sue, just north of Asheville NC. Steve & Sue are also DC ex-pats, having left the Washington area two years ago. They moved to the town of Weaverville, where every day they look out from their ridgetop to incredible views in nearly every direction. They've traded the day-to-day Washington DC routine for life with four goats, two cats, and a jackass ... hmmmm .... maybe not as big a shift from DC life as it may at first seem. That, good coffee, company, and Internet connections made for a sublime way to spend a day.

... and for those of you who made the inevitable comment about whether Daisy was being strapped to the roof of the car (and there were more than one of you!) .... well, you just don't understand the dynamics of who's the boss in the family:

Bye-bye McLean ... first stop: Raleigh!!

Monday, May 21:

Well, the movers showed up here this morning, and stuff's beginning to disappear from the house. Last Friday the packing crew was here all day, and since then we've been camping out of our suitcases and dining off of fine plastic plates and utensils. But unlike us, these guys seem to know what they're doing. And their backs are waaaay stronger!

Daisy's spending the day in time out -- generally taking it easy except to bark angrily whenever a mover dares cross her turf. But she's excited about the move, and can't wait to begin her road trip. Yesterday, in making sure that her travel crate fit in the car, she kept volunteering her services, and pronounced it as sublimely roadworthy. She's gonna be a good co-pilot!

By 4PM today, our house was all loaded up and out the door.

We took a final look around the old McLean Homestead. It was bittersweet, and kinda echo-y:

We waved goodbye, and hit the road, heading down to Raleigh, North Carolina. Washington DC gave us a "special" send-off with one of its two-hour traffic delays on I-95 South. Ugh.

Expected ETD: early evening ... with luck.
